The Botanical Garden opened in 1935 in the northeastern part of Yerevan on 80 acres of semi deserted land. The botanical center was built three years later. In 1944 the 610 square meter greenhouse was built. It has a winter garden, water and subtropical plants section, tropical garden, and domestic plants. In 1950, the garden became a part of the Institute of Biology. The garden includes plants unique to Caucasian, North American, European, Siberian and Eastern Asian regions. By the year 1980 the the garden housed 1240 types of plants.
