Cloud Gate

The Cloud Gate is a centerpiece sculpture at the AT&T Plaza at Millennium Park, located in the Chicago Loop.  It was constructed between the years of 2004 and 2006, and comprises of 168 stainless steel plates welded together. Inspired by liquid mercury, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams, making it reflect and distort the city’s skyline. Thanks to its shape, the Cloud Gate earned the nickname “The Bean.” According to project manager Lou Cerny of MTH Industries, "When the light is right, you can't see where the sculpture ends and the sky begins."
