Kote Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre was founded in 1928. A Georgian theater director - Kote Marjanishvili, has founded this theater. Marjanishvili is an important figure in Georgian theatrical life, as he was the first person in Georgia to create a modern theater.

The theater has been renovated in 2009 as a result of which the lighting system and seats of the theatre have been replaced. Marjanishvili Theatre is also home to Fingers’ Theater and Sukhumi State Drama Theatre.
