Gergeti Trinity Church
Gergeti Trinity Church (also known as Tsminda Sameba) is a well-known name for Holy Trinity Church situated near the Gergeti village, Georgia. The church is located on the right bank of Chkheri River, at an altitude of 2170 meters, under Mount Kazbegi.
History
Built in the 14th century, the Gergeti Trinity Church was the only cross-cupola church in Khevi province. The separate belltower comes from the same period as the church itself. It has become a symbol for Georgia due to being located on top of a steep hill surrounded by the expanse of nature.
According to the 18th century Georgian writer Vakhushti Batonishvili in times of danger, precious relics from Mtskheta, including Saint Nino's Cross were brought here for safekeeping. During the Soviet times, while all religious services were forbidden, the church was still a popular tourist destination. Currently it is an active foundation of the Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church.
