Tbilisi International Airport is the main international airport in Georgia. It is located 17km southeast of Tbilisi.
The first terminal building was constructed in 1952 in the Stalinist architecture style. It had a floor plan with symmetric axes and a monumental risalit. The two side wings had blind arcades in giant order. A new terminal building was finished in 1990, which was designed according to the International style. By the statistics of 1981 Tbilisi airport was the twelfth largest airport in the Soviet Union, totalling 1,478,000 passengers on flights connecting Tbilisi with cities of other republics in the union.
The reconstruction project was finished in 2007. A new international terminal, car park, taxiway and runway were constructed. A rail link to the city centre was built. There is also a rail service to the city centre of Tbilisi (having 6 trains per day in each direction).
The airport is constructed with a contemporary design and high technology. It can provide the flow of passengers and luggage from the parking lot to the planes and has a 25,000 square meter total usable area.
