House Museum of Hovhannes Tumanyan
If you want to get in touch with Armenian literary heritage, the house-museum of Hovhannes Tumanyan is a must to visit. Tumanyan may be named “a man of people” as his writings mostly illustrate the life of ordinary Armenians. Tumanyan (February 19, 1869 – March 23, 1923) was a great poet of all times and a great public figure of his time.
What you can see in this museum
The House-museum of Hovhannes Tumanyan opened in April 1953 on the 30th anniversary of the poet’s death. The founder and the first director of the museum was Tumanyan’s daughter. The museum exhibits copies of manuscripts, photo documents and original illustrations of Tumanyan’s writings.
In 1969, new show halls were added to the house-museum to exhibit materials related to Tumanyan’s life and work. Those who are fans of Tumanyan’s work, may be excited to see his personal items, documents, manuscripts, sketches and publications in more than 40 languages. You will feel atmosphere where Tumanyan lived, as this museum recreates the environment in which Tumanyan lived and worked in Tbilisi. His belongings are exhibited and the interiors of the dining room, living room and office of the poet's home in Tbilisi are recreated. The large hall displays the poet’s private library of about 8000 books.
