Stanislavsky Russian Drama Theatre

Theater is an integral part of culture in any country. To understand the mindset and lifestyle of a nation it is necessary to get familiar with its theater first of all. If you would be lucky to get to the capital of Armenia, you should visit Russian Armenian Drama Theater named Stanislavsky in honour of the outstanding Russian stage director, actor and teacher Konstantin Stanislavsky.

The Stanislavski Russian Drama Theatre was established in 1937. Throughout 42 years, the director of the theater has been National Actor of Armenia, Honored Artist of Russia, winner of the international Stanislavsky Award, professor Alexander Grigoryan.

The theater is located in the heart of Yerevan, on Abovyan Street, closer to Moscow movie theater and is one of the most significant cultural centres of Armenia. The theater repertoire is becoming bigger from year to year, however the theater-goers will agree that the most successful stage productions are Funeral Prayer and What the Butler Saw.

The first actors of the theatre were invited from Moscow, Leningrad (Saint Petersburg), Tbilisi, and Baku. Soon Armenian graduates from the Yerevan theater institute supplemented the first troupe. Currently, the theater stages Russian classical and modern plays, those by Armenian and foreign authors, and gives performances for children.

Here is the list of performances: Gorin’s “Funeral Prayer”, Griboyedov’s “Wit Works Woe”, Shant’s “The Princess of the Fallen Fortress”, Sundukyan’s “The Ruined Home”, Ishkhanian’s “The King of Kilikia”, Orton’s “What the Butler Saw”, Lasege’s “Oh,These French Doings”, Letrase’s “Baby”, Chenau’s “Good Լuck”, Grigorian and Marinossian’s “Broken Chain”, and Ostrovski’s “The Rainstorm.” The performances for children are: Marshak’s “Cat’s House”, Andersen’s “The Princess and the Soldier”, and Moroz and Shugurov’s “The Princess and the Pea”.

In the theater, during of ten-minute break, it is possible to visit the buffet in the theater or to look at the photos on the foyer walls. The furniture of the theater is of classical style – abundance of velvet and scarlet tones. Acoustics corresponds to high standards.

The theater has been awarded sets of the awards, one of which is "Meetings in Russia" at festival Grand prix.
