Geographical Position
Dilijan is a lush, green city located in the northern Armenian province of Tavush. The forested city is home to numerous Armenian artists, composers, and filmmakers. It features traditional Armenian architecture. The city's population is 15,600 people.
Dilijan lies on the banks of the Aghstev River with a length of more than 20 kilometers and at an elevation of 1500 meters above sea level.
Goris is located in a temperate climate zone. The weather is characterized with cold, snowy winters and cool summers. The average temperature in January is –2°C and +18 °C in July.
General Description
Dilijan is the one of the most famous resort cities of. It is a very popular vacation spot.
Armenia. The human kind has been living in this region since the Late Bronze and the Early Iron Ages. During the ancient times, the territory of Dilijan was known by the name Hovk. Hovk was a forest favored by the Arutsacirt kings. A settlement called Pokr Dili was founded in the 13th century, not far away from the current area of Dilijan town.
In 1666, the name Dilijan was first mentioned in the notes of the French traveller Jean Chardin. Dilijan obtained city status in1951.
The Armenian government has applied a new plan since 2009 to turn Dilijan into a developed financial center. According to the officials, a considerable amount of operations by the Central Bank of Armenia will move the northern town of Dilijan starting from 2013. Currently, many significant financial and cultural institutions are under construction, such as the Dilijan Regional Financial and Banking Center, the International School of Dilijan, the Old Dilijan-Tufenkian Center, and the modern building of the Dilijan theatre.
Dilijan is among the most popular destinations for tourists who are visiting Armenia. It has many luxurious hotels and sanatoriums, which creates the opportunity of enjoying the nature's beauty and historical sites. The town is also rich in its therapeutic mineral water fountains.
There is an outdoor amphitheatre in the center of Dilijan.
