Kapan Town
With its wildlife and lush forests Kapan has always been one of the most attractive cities of Armenia.
Geographical Position and Climate
Kapan City is located in RA Syunik Province, 750-1050 m above sea level. The Yerevan-Meghri highway runs through Kapan.
The climate is temperate. In the summer, the maximum air temperature is +38 C, in the winter minimum air temperature is -5 C. The annual precipitation is 500-600 mm.
The Voghji and Vachagan Rivers run through Kapan City. The city is surrounded by lush forests. Mostly oak and beech trees grow in these forests. There are also many bears, wild boars, lynxes, and wildcats. In semi-deserts, there are jackals.

The Points of Interest nearby Kapan:
- Khustup Mountain is 3201 meters high. You can choose among the 5 different routes to get to this mountain top. There are slopes both for amateur and professional hikers. The easiest road to climb starts from Baghaburj village. If you cross the village, there are only 5 km left to reach the mountain top. The most difficult slope to climb starts from Vachagan village and continues up to the river. Then past Mount Vordzak it stretches to Khustup top.
- Baghaberd Fort, which is about 10 km from Kapan, dates back to the 3rd century. It was built during the rule of the king Arshak II and was of great strategic importance.
- Vahanavanq is about 6 km from Kapan. It was founded in 911. Vahanavanq was the cultural and religious center of the historic Syunik Province.
- Shikahogh reserve covers about 100 km² (25,000 acres) of land. It is the second largest and the only intact forest reserve in Armenia. Shikahogh reserve is 25 km from Kapan. You need to get permission from the reserve director to get in.
